The best restaurants, coffee shops, hidden gems, and unforgettable coastal experiences around Monterey Bay, California.

There's something incredibly special about living along the Monterey Bay coastline.

Between the towering redwoods of Big Sur, the charming streets of Carmel-by-the-Sea, and the beautiful beaches scattered throughout Monterey and Pacific Grove, this little corner of California is genuinely one of my favorite places in the world. That’s why my family and I chose to buy a home and settle here.

And the food? Pretty incredible too!

I'm Jed, a local wedding and elopement photographer based in Monterey, California. Over the years, I've spent countless hours exploring this coastline, photographing beautiful love stories, meeting amazing people, and discovering some pretty incredible places along the way.

One of the questions I get asked often by couples traveling here is, "Where should we eat while we're visiting?"

And I LOVE this question.

I wanted to put together a guide to some of the best restaurants, coffee shops, and local gems worth exploring.

Consider this your starting point for experiencing the Monterey Peninsula like a local.

1. Best Places to Eat in Big Sur, California

Big Sur is easily one of the most beautiful places in California.

Between the dramatic cliffs, winding roads, giant redwoods, and seemingly endless Pacific Ocean views, there's a reason people travel from all over the world to experience this place.

As a Big Sur wedding photographer, I've spent more time along Highway 1 than I can count, and one of my favorite things about working here is discovering places that make the entire experience feel even more memorable.

If you're wondering where to eat in Big Sur, here are some places worth adding to your itinerary.

best places to eat in big sur

Nepenthe — Iconic Big Sur Ocean Views

Visit Nepenthe's Website

If there's one restaurant that perfectly captures the feeling of Big Sur, it's Nepenthe.

Perched high above the Pacific Ocean, this iconic restaurant offers some of the most beautiful coastal views you'll find anywhere. There's something special about sitting outside, enjoying a meal, and watching the afternoon sunlight fall across the mountains and ocean.

The atmosphere is relaxed, the scenery is breathtaking, and the experience is exactly what people imagine when they think about Big Sur. My recommendation? Plan your visit around the late afternoon or evening so you can enjoy the sunset along the coast.

Big Sur River Inn — Relax Along the River

Visit Big Sur River Inn

Big Sur River Inn is known for its rustic atmosphere and Adirondack chairs placed along the river, where visitors can relax with their feet near the water or in the water to wade around. If you're traveling with family or simply want a peaceful afternoon away from the coastal wind, this is a wonderful stop.

It’s also a beautiful wedding venue. Check out one my favorite weddings that I’ve shot here before.

Treebones Resort — A Unique Big Sur Dining Experience

Visit Treebones Resort

Treebones is one of the most unique properties along the Big Sur coastline.

Known for its oceanfront yurts, peaceful atmosphere, and incredible natural surroundings, it's a destination that feels completely different from your typical hotel or restaurant.

Their dining experiences, including the Wild Coast Sushi Bar, are especially interesting for couples looking for something memorable. I've actually photographed an intimate elopement at Treebones, and the entire property has such a beautiful, peaceful energy.

You can also check out this beautiful Treebones Resort elopement I photographed.

Big Sur Taphouse — Casual Food and a Relaxed Atmosphere

Find Big Sur Taphouse

Not every meal in Big Sur needs to be an elaborate dining experience.

Sometimes you just want a comfortable place to grab something to eat after a long day of hiking, exploring, or driving along Highway 1. Big Sur Taphouse is that casual stop you’ve been looking for with a laid-back atmosphere that fits the forest vibe.

It's a great option for travelers looking for something easygoing without sacrificing the Big Sur experience.

Deetjen's Big Sur Inn — Rustic Charm and a Romantic Setting

Visit Deetjen's Big Sur Inn

If you love historic buildings, cozy interiors, and the feeling of escaping into another world, Deetjen's deserves a place on your list.

Surrounded by the redwood forest, this historic property is full of character. It's the kind of setting that feels especially romantic on a foggy Big Sur morning. For couples planning an anniversary trip or a romantic getaway, it's absolutely worth researching.

Carmel-by-the-Sea is one of my favorite little towns along the California coast.

Everything about Carmel feels intentional, from its beautiful architecture and charming storefronts to its art galleries, hidden courtyards, and incredible restaurants.

You can spend an entire afternoon walking through downtown Carmel before making your way down to Carmel Beach for sunset.

La Bicyclette is one of those restaurants that fits Carmel perfectly.

The cozy interior, European-inspired atmosphere, and thoughtfully prepared dishes make it a beautiful choice for a romantic dinner. It's especially popular for its wood-fired pizzas and seasonal menu.

I love the idea of spending an afternoon exploring Carmel, enjoying dinner here, and finishing the evening with a walk along the beach. That's a pretty awesome date night.

Dametra Café — A Lively Carmel Favorite

One of my personal favorite date spots (my wife would agree) is Damtera.

The Cheese Shop — Perfect for a Carmel Beach Picnic

Visit The Cheese Shop

Here's an idea that I absolutely love.

Instead of planning a traditional restaurant dinner, pick up a selection of cheeses, crackers, and other picnic essentials from The Cheese Shop and head down to Carmel Beach. Carmel Beach is one of the most beautiful places to watch the sunset along the Monterey Peninsula. The white sand, beautiful cypress trees, and soft evening light make it an incredible place to spend time together.

It's also one of my favorite environments for romantic engagement and couples photography.

Look at this lovely sunset elopement photoshoot at Carmel Beach.

If you're visiting Carmel for something meaningful, an exceptional dinner can become part of the memory.

It's an excellent option before exploring the shops and galleries around downtown Carmel.

Just keep in mind that popular brunch restaurants can get busy, especially on weekends so plan accordingly.

It's a wonderful option for couples looking for an evening out with Italian-inspired food and a lively atmosphere.

Revival Ice Cream — A Sweet Monterey Treat

Visit Revival Ice Cream

Okay, we can't talk about the best places to eat in Monterey without mentioning dessert.

Revival Ice Cream is a local favorite known for its creative flavors and handmade ice cream. It’s actually my kiddo’s favorite place to get dessert as a family.

Sometimes the best way to finish an evening is with a good scoop of ice cream and a walk through town. You have to try the iconic “Bee’s Knees” flavor featuring real honeycomb inside. Mind-blowing.

4. Best Places to Eat in Carmel Valley

Carmel Valley feels like a completely different world compared to the coastline.

While Carmel-by-the-Sea is often cool and foggy, Carmel Valley tends to be warmer, sunnier, and surrounded by beautiful rolling hills.

It's an incredible place to spend an afternoon enjoying wineries, outdoor patios, and a slower pace.

If you're planning a romantic getaway to the Monterey Peninsula, I'd absolutely recommend setting aside some time to explore this area.

Both are beautiful, but in completely different ways.
